A man was killed Friday evening after being gored by a bull during a festival in southern Spain, local officials confirmed. The incident happened in Beas de Segura.

The victim, identified as 33-year-old cattle breeder Santiago Barrero San Roman, was attacked at around 7 pm local time. According to People, the bull charged and gored him multiple times, causing injuries to his groin, chest, and abdomen.

He was taken to a nearby first-aid station for emergency treatment but died roughly an hour later while being transferred to a hospital.

Festival organizers confirmed the death in a public statement. “The organizers of the San Marcos Festival deeply regret to announce that a tragic incident occurred during today's festivities, resulting in the death of one participant,” they said.

Despite the fatal incident, events were not called off. “In accordance with the current San Marcos Festival Regulations, tomorrow's celebration and scheduled activities will not be suspended,” the statement added. “However, as a sign of respect and mourning, a minute of silence will be observed, accompanied by a trumpet blast, as stipulated by the regulations.”

“On behalf of all the residents of San Marcos, we extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.”

The Association of Fighting Bull Breeders also issued a message following the incident, writing on X, “we join in the sorrow over the passing of rancher Santiago Barrero San Roman. We extend our affection and our condolences to his family and friends. May he rest in peace.” He leaves behind a son and wife.

The San Marcos Festival, which dates back to the 16th century, includes traditional running of the bulls through the town’s streets along with other festivities.
