Human Events Daily host Jack Posobiec said Haitians in Ohio whose Temporary Protected Status has ended are now being called into ICE offices, where he said some are being offered the choice of leaving the United States with a free flight and $2,600 or remaining in the country under electronic monitoring.
“What is happening on the ground? I'll tell you right now. The Haitians are getting out. The Haitians are on the way out. And here's what's big, all right? So, the way it works is this, and this is how I understand it, that every Haitian that has now lost TPS, and we know, of course, the Springfield, Ohio area and Blue Ash, Ohio, there's a couple of different towns down there, every Haitian down there is now starting to get summonses where they have to go and report to their local ICE office.”
Posobiec said the notices are connected to the end of TPS, which previously allowed eligible Haitian nationals to remain and work legally in the United States. DHS has said TPS is temporary and that those whose status has ended must leave unless they have another legal basis to remain.
“And why is that? They don't have legal status. They don't have legal status to live in the United States or be in the United States anymore. They do, as Joshua Lisec, a Dayton, Ohio native, and the author of the upcoming book, Haitians of Springfield, has written that he says that his sources on the ground are telling him that it is simply not legal to stay in Ohio or, say, in the United States if you were a Haitian on TPS.”
“The Haitians are being brought down to the ICE offices, and they're being given a choice. They're being told, number one, you can have, as an offer, right, you don't have TPS anymore. Done. It's gone. But we understand that puts you in the lurch, and here's what we're going to do for you, because we are compassionate people. They're offering them one chance for a one-way trip home. Direct flight home, free ticket, and $2,600 cash to go back to Haiti.”
DHS has separately confirmed that it is offering people whose TPS has ended a $2,600 payment and free flight home. Some Haitians have reportedly accepted the offer, while others remain in deportation proceedings or have already been removed.
“Now, some of them have taken it. Others have been directly deported. But there are some that are still working their way through the deportation process. They have courts involved. There's due process involved. They haven't been able to get all of them. Some of them directly have asylum claims. They're working through the courts.”
Posobiec then described electronic monitoring as another option for Haitians whose immigration cases remain unresolved.
“So, what do you do with someone who is in the country, doesn't have legal standing to be in the country, but are waiting for their process? They say your other option, which is your choice, by the way, your choice, is to take this ankle monitor, and with the ankle monitor, you are then restricted to a 75-mile radius. You have to check in, and you have to wear the ankle monitor at all times.”
The remarks come after video circulated showing Haitian immigrant Monsanto Maler crying after being fitted with an ankle monitor at an ICE office in Blue Ash. Hundreds of people gathered outside the facility Sunday as Haitian nationals reported for immigration appointments following the end of TPS.
Posobiec argued that the enforcement actions demonstrate the impact of elections and changes in federal immigration policy.
"And they are in fact choosing their ankle monitors. Folks, the Haitians are getting ankle monitored. Don't let them tell you that elections don't have consequences. And the fact of the matter remains, the people of this country will decide who gets to be here, and who doesn't. Not the elites, not the neocons, the people.”
