Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with President Donald Trump at the White House Tuesday as the two leaders looked to end the war with Russia.
The meeting comes as Zelensky faces pressure at home following the removal of Ukraine’s defense minister and army chief, while Trump has continued seeking a diplomatic breakthrough in the conflict. Zelensky was expected to push for further US weapons assistance, particularly additional air defense capabilities, as Ukraine continues facing Russian missile and drone attacks.
Discussions were also expected to include a possible agreement limiting long-range strikes between Russia and Ukraine.
The Ukrainian president was also scheduled to attend the funeral of Sen. Lindsey Graham, the South Carolina Republican who died July 11 after returning from Ukraine. Graham had been one of Ukraine’s strongest supporters within Trump’s political circle.
Analysts have suggested Graham’s death, along with shifting views among some Trump allies, could influence the administration’s approach toward Kyiv, reports the New York Times.
The relationship between Trump and Zelensky has previously been strained. Their White House meeting earlier in Trump’s second term ended in a public blowup, and the administration later reduced military assistance to Ukraine during peace negotiations.
However, Ukraine has seen battlefield gains through expanded drone operations, and the United States has sought Ukrainian expertise on drone technology and counter-drone systems.
“There is a better chemistry now I see between them,” said Volodymyr Dubovyk, director of the Center for International Studies at Odesa National University.
“Maybe Zelensky understands Trump a little better,” he added. “Maybe Trump understands Zelensky a little bit better.”
