Tehran retaliates on shipping targets as US launches 100 new strikes

The brief ceasefire between the United States and Iran has collapsed, with President Donald Trump declaring the truce "over" after Iran targeted commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, prompting a massive new wave of US military strikes.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced Wednesday night that American forces struck approximately 90 Iranian military targets in the latest operation, just one day after hitting roughly 80 additional targets. The strikes targeted air defense systems, missile and drone storage sites, coastal surveillance assets, naval capabilities, and military logistics infrastructure along Iran's coastline.

The renewed campaign comes after Iran launched attacks against commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most critical oil shipping lanes. "We're going to hit them hard tonight," Trump told reporters at the NATO summit in Ankara, adding that Iran's leaders "are behaving very badly, as they have for 47 years."

Trump later declared that the ceasefire was effectively finished, saying there was little confidence Tehran would negotiate in good faith. "My whole life is deals. I don't see it, I don't see it with them," Trump said. "There may be a big attack and it will knock out a lot of stuff."

The president also revealed the administration has revoked Iranian oil sanctions waivers that had been granted during negotiations, signaling Washington is abandoning its recent diplomatic approach. According to CENTCOM, Wednesday's operation targeted approximately 90 military sites, following Tuesday's strikes against roughly 80 targets, including more than 60 Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps fast attack boats that US officials said threatened maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran has vowed retaliation. Iranian Parliament National Security Commission spokesman Ebrahim Rezaei wrote on X that Iranians should "wait for the hard slap," saying the country's late Supreme Leader had taught the nation "not to fear America." Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei warned that any US allies assisting the operation would face "grave consequences," accusing NATO countries of being complicit in what Tehran called unlawful aggression.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte defended the response, calling the US strikes "absolutely necessary." The renewed fighting immediately rattled global energy markets. Speaking aboard Air Force One following the NATO summit, Trump reassured those concerned about higher oil prices. "If we hit Iran, oil goes up a little bit, it's all right," he said. "We're de-nuking Iran. They're not going to have a nuclear weapon."

The president also addressed reports that he switched aircraft after departing Turkey, saying the newly renovated Air Force One had been flown separately so US service members stationed in Britain could tour it. Asked about potential Iranian threats, Trump responded that he is under threat "all the time." "I'm number one on their list," he said.
