The defendant in the case, Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, was a psychiatrist of Saudi origin. The incident sent shockwaves across Germany and inflamed the already contentious debate around immigration, coming just months ahead of a general election held in February 2025.
“Throughout the entire trial, the defendant displayed behavior indicative of a narcissistic personality disorder, a diagnosis also confirmed by the expert witness," a court spokesman said, per Reuters. "This means he places himself at the centre of everything. He sees only himself and not the suffering of other people."
He was charged with six counts of murder and attempted murder of many others. Among those killed were five women aged 45 to 75 and a boy who was only nine years old.
According to prosecutors, the perpetrator appears to have been driven by grievances stemming from an unsuccessful civil legal dispute and repeated failures with various criminal complaints and is believed to have carried out the attack without any accomplices.
Al-Abdulmohsen rammed through barriers surrounding the market and was then taken into custody. He was a doctor at the Magdeburg Clinic. Police closed the market off after the incident and eyewitnesses said that there were many children as well as families at the market that night.
