President Donald Trump has declared that there will be a three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine on May 9, 10, and 11.

"I am pleased to announce that there will be a THREE DAY CEASEFIRE (May 9th, 10th, and 11th) in the War between Russia and Ukraine. The Celebration in Russia is for Victory Day but, likewise, in Ukraine, because they were also a big part and factor of World War II. This Ceasefire will include a suspension of all kinetic activity, and also a prison swap of 1,000 prisoners from each Country."

"This request was made directly by me, and I very much appreciate its agreement by President Vladimir Putin and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Hopefully, it is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard fought War. Talks are continuing on ending this Major Conflict, the biggest since World War II, and we are getting closer and closer every day. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" he added.

Russia as well as Ukraine had previously announced the ceasefires at different days, so the timeline for the ceasefire is not clear. Earlier this week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that there would be a ceasefire on May 5 and 6. Putin suggested holding a ceasefire on May 8 and 9.

The announcement comes after top US officials met with a delegation from Ukraine in Miami, according to CBS News. Trump and Putin talked last week. Previous to Trump's declaration, Russia and Ukraine accused each other of violating ceasefires that they had declared separately. This comes as Moscow is preparing to hold its annual World War II parade. It has been four years since the invasion of Ukraine from Russia that took place under former President Joe Biden's watch in 2022.
