A US business executive was killed and her young son seriously injured after a tour vehicle overturned in Nicaragua, according to local reports.

Kasey Grelle, 41, founder and CEO of Aux Insights, died on March 23 when a resort-organized tour vehicle lost control and rolled over. Her 11-year-old son Julian suffered severe injuries and was airlifted to a children’s hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, where he is recovering.

The crash happened while Grelle was traveling with her husband, musician Dave Grelle, and their three children. Authorities said the driver lost control before the vehicle overturned. No further details on the cause were released.

Julian sustained head trauma, skull and spine fractures, and a collapsed lung. His recovery is expected to be lengthy, says the Daily Mail.

Grelle’s brother, Andy Joyce, wrote in a Facebook post that the family was “devastated” by the loss. “Kasey was one of the most brilliant, driven and selfless people I have ever met,” he wrote. “She was relentless in everything she did, especially when it came to helping her people.”

Her husband also posted tributes online, writing: “This can’t be real. I miss her so much,” and “She was a superhero to our kids… There’s a hole in my universe.” He added, “Don’t take a day for granted. Live your life. Love your people. We did. I’m so glad we did.”

Grelle previously led a turnaround at digital media company Quillt, eliminating $40 million in debt. “I was spending a lot of time running this company from a hospital room,” she told Biz Journals in 2021.

She is survived by her husband and three children, Julian, 11, Kit, nine, and Des, six.
