Police Scotland said officers were called to Calder Gardens at about 8.25 am following reports of a man with a blade, reports the BBC. The incident is now contained, but specialist units remain at the scene and enquiries is ongoing. Reports have come that the man attempted to get into a nursery. witness Abigail Clegg, said the armed man had “tried to get into the school, the nursery." She said, “He (then) went into the shop. He ransacked the shop, the shop’s a mess.”
There have been no reports on whether the man has been arrested as of the time of publishing, with some reports stating that he is still in the apartment.
Two people were injured and taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment. Their conditions have not been disclosed.
Firearms officers and other specialist resources were deployed to the Calder area. Cobbinshaw House, a nearby tower block, was cordoned off, with at least six police vehicles positioned outside. Photos taken from the scene appeared to show the suspected attacker smiling from inside a flat window as officers operated below.
Chief Inspector Scott Kennedy said: “The earlier disturbance in the Calder area of Edinburgh is now contained and there is not believed to be any wider risk to the public.
“The incident is not being treated as terror-related. Officers were called to reports of a man with a bladed weapon on Calder Gardens around 8.25am. Specialist resources, including firearms officers, are in attendance at a property nearby and inquiries are ongoing.
“Two people were injured and taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment.”
He added: “I understand this is an alarming incident for the local community. I want to reassure the public, officers will remain in the area as our enquiries continue. Anyone with information or concerns can approach these officers or call us on 101.”
Wester Hailes High School was placed into lockdown as a precaution. Parents were sent a message stating: “The school is in lockdown following an incident in the community this morning. The children are safe.” Nearby council buildings, including schools and early years centres, were also closed to the public following police advice.
Local resident William Ramsay said he believed the man had entered the stairwell of his building. “He smashed the local shop, possibly stabbed two people unconfirmed. Armed police, dogs been here for about two hours,” he said.
