According to the Israeli Defense Forces, missiles were launched from Iran at Israel in a retaliatory attack. Many missiles were seen getting intercepted by Israel's "Iron Dome" defense system.
Explosions were heard in Israel as a barrage of missile strikes was launched. According to the Times of Israel, smoke was seen rising in Tel Aviv after apparent missile impacts in the area. There were at least 15 people that were wounded in the attack, according Axios.
The injuries were light to moderate following the missiles launched into the country, Israel War Room posted. As the missile flew over Israel, sirens were heard, warning Israeli citizens of the incoming attack.
There were reports of multiple waves of missiles, amounting to around 200, being launched at the Jewish state from Iran as Israeli citizens were ordered to remain in their shelters. Iran's state media claimed that the country was able to shoot down two Israeli fighter jets with the wave of missile attacks which the IDF denied.
Additionally, an American official confirmed to Axios reporter Barak Ravid that the US is helping to shoot down the missiles being launched at Israel.
"The official said there are hundreds of thousands of American citizens and other American assets in Israel and the U.S. is working to protect them," Ravid reported.
Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei made a televised speech as the attack was launched, where he said that the attack on Israel would leave the country "helpless" and added, "The Iranian nation won't permit the blood of its valued martyrs to go unavenged, nor will it ignore the violation of its airspace."
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, in response to the missile strikes, said that Iran "crossed red lines when it dared to fire missiles at civilian population centers in Israel."
"We will continue to protect the citizens of Israel and ensure that the ayatollah regime pays a very heavy price for its criminal actions," Katz added.
