Charlie Kirk hosted Candace Owens on his podcast Tuesday to talk about her new show, ‘Convicting a Murderer’ on DailyWire+ and dive deeper into the implications of the true-crime craze that has gripped the country for the past decade.
Her show dissects, specifically, a wildly popular Netflix show from a little under 10 years ago, 'Making a Murderer,' and exposes a dark side of Steven Avery that its producers neglected to include.
Owens refreshed the audience about the premise of the original show, which highlighted Avery beginning when he was exonerated from a wrongful conviction after 12 years in prison. He then went on to be convicted of the murder of Teresa Halbach and was sentenced to life in prison.
While the show’s goal was to lead viewers towards the belief that he was framed by police, there were many details about his muddied past that Owens reveals in ‘Convicting a Murderer’ including animal torture, abduction, and violence towards women.
Kirk and Owens dove deeper into the motives of filmmakers and media moguls alike to push such propaganda and evoke mass outrage amongst viewers.
“When I see the media, more particularly Hollywood, go all in on certain narratives, I can't help but wonder ‘what is their political objective?’ Do you think, more times than not, when they cover these stories, they're overly sensationalizing them to maybe make law enforcement look bad? To maybe try to get defund the police type narratives?” Kirk asked.
Referring to ‘Making a Murderer’ he continued, “In this one in particular, it seemed as if to almost create a sympathy campaign for a criminal, not for a victim.”
Owens reminded Kirk that when the show came out in 2015, “BLM was brewing.” She pointed to influential left-wing celebrities such as Trevor Noah who used the show to bait “white people” into distrusting the police and giving funding to BLM.
“This is what people don't consider is that when celebrities do lend their their voices to this when Alec Baldwin pretends to be outraged…”
She paused to highlight a moment when the disgraced celebrity publicly ripped apart the brother of the late Teresa Halbach, claiming “he was faking his emotions.”
Owens continued, “This led to conspiracy theories that Teresa was still alive, people were committed to the idea that she was in Mexico…wild conspiracy theories — and the family was attacked.”
She concluded that “it's such filth. It's such vitriol, and it is such a backwards way of looking at our society where we attack the actual victims, and we celebrate the criminals.”
