Pfizer is expected to ask federal regulators Wednesday to authorize its coronavirus booster shot for all adults.

The FDA is considered likely to grant the request, possibly before Thanksgiving, the New York Times reports. Since the first booster shots were authorized for emergency use in September, the federal government has been persistent on expanding eligibility.

An FDA advisory board voted against a similar request from Pfizer in September. The committee instead recommended booster shots on an emergency basis for those over the age of 65 or at high-risk of COVID-19.

Those categories were still  broad enough to cover at least 60 percent of the population.

Currently, adult recipients of both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are eligible for a booster shot six months after their second injection if they are at least 65 years old or at high-risk. .

Johnson & Johnson recipients are also eligible for a booster - a second shot to the one-dose.

Recipients of all three have the option to pick which vaccine brand they would like as a booster.
