For Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) who listened to Tuesday night’s RNC speeches from the convention floor, the atmosphere during prospective first lady Ann Romney’s speech was a little bit eerie.
“To be in a roomful of that many people, there’s usually a murmur,” he said. “You could hear a pin drop with Ann Romney. She was mesmerizing.”
McConnell, who addressed a breakfast crowd at a Politico-organized event Tuesday morning, said New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was in an unenviable position having to follow Romney in the speech lineup, but he also delivered a thrilling address in his pull-no-punches New Jersey style.
“Christie, he’s been a straight talker extraordinaire, and was again last night,” McConnell said.
Former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, who also spoke, said Ann Romney’s speech had been a new and insightful look at Republican nominee Mitt Romney through his wife’s eyes.
“I thought the whole feel of the place changed when Ann Romney came up,” he said. “Millions and millions of women were watching TV thinking what we all know: that a wife knows more about her husband than anyone else in the world, times ten.”
