The son of one of South Carolina's best-loved Republicans came out for Newt Gingrich today, two days before the primary. Mike Campbell, son of the late Gov. (1986-94) Carroll Campbell, told HUMAN EVENTS he would come out strongly for the Georgian later on Thursday.

Young Campbell, who ran Mike Huckabee's campaign in the state four years ago, was a Jon Huntsman backer until the former Utah governor bowed out of the race Monday.

Campbell's support of Gingrich came days after Bob McAlister, once top aide to the elder Campbell and himself a Huntsman man, also endorsed the former House speaker (who served in Congress with Carroll Campbell from 1978-86). Gov. Campbell and his team were key players in the Palmetto State primary wins of Ronald Reagan, both George Bushes and Bob Dole.
