The big surprise of the debt-ceiling drama last night was the return of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ), who arrived in the final moments to cast her vote in favor of the compromise plan.  She suffered a deadly gunshot wound to the head only seven months ago.

Giffords returned to therapy in Houston after casting her vote.  In a statement, she said, “I have closely followed the debate over our debt ceiling and have been deeply disappointed at what’s going on in Washington.  I strongly believe that crossing the aisle for the good of the American people is more important than party politics.”

The American republic is not ruled by violence and fear.  We do not submit to the demands of oppressors, or the veto of madmen.

Sometimes life is fragile… and sometimes it isn’t.
