In an exclusive interview with HUMAN EVENTS, Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina emphatically said that he believes Republicans should “resist” a vote to enlarge the top limit on the nation’s debt.

"We need to have a showdown at this point that we are not going to increase our debt ceiling anymore. We are going to cut [spending] necessary to stay within the current levels, which is over $14 trillion. This needs to be a big showdown."

Another $400 billion to go and the country would hit the current debt ceiling of $14.3 trillion. A vote is likely to occur in the spring on whether to raise the threshold.

DeMint was recently named “Conservative of the Year” in 2010 by HUMAN EVENTS, an honor that has been bestowed on such luminaries as Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin, Dick Cheney and Rep. Mike Pence, to name a few.

DeMint believes Congress needs to adopt a Balanced Budget Amendment, or something similar, to get national spending under control.

"We have to have an institutional discipline that forces" cuts, he noted because, as he points out, the "only debate is how much to spend, how much to add, how much new debt. We haven’t gotten on the other side of the ledger yet."

"Enough is a enough, folks. We can't keep taking home the bacon and take
care of the best interests of our country."
