Jackie Gingrich Cushman’s new book The Essential American: 25 Documents and Speeches Every American Should Own highlights the great documents and speeches in our nation’s history.

An author and nationally syndicated columnist, Cushman writes an introduction to each speech and document to explain the historical context and the enduring lessons about America.
The daughter of the former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, Cushman has a unique first-hand view of how the words of great American leaders impact today’s political figures.
Cushman said that she wrote The Essential American because “it’s been so partisan recently, so negative in the political area. So we really wanted to do something that would be positive, American stories.”
