Once again, Rep. Jeff Flake (R.-Ariz.) has discovered a waste of federal tax dollars worthy of his "Egregious Earmark of the Week" award.

This week it was discovered in the Transportation-Treasury-HUD appropriations bill (H.R. 3058) for fiscal year 2006. The award goes to the city of Rome, N.Y. which is collecting $100,000 for the construction of a community recreation center.

"The explosion of pork projects like this is due largely to the fact that too many Members of Congress say, 'When in Rome…,' when it comes to making appropriations requests," Flake said.

The bill passed through the House, 392-31, on November 18, and then through the Senate the same day by unanimous consent. On November 30, President Bush signed the bill into law.
