A Maryland judge declared the state’s 33-year-old marriage law unconstitutional today. The law defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

Siding with 19 gay men and women and the American Civil Liberties Union, Judge M. Brooke Murdock said the law infringes upon the state’s constitutional assurance of equal rights.

Explaining her decision, the judge wrote: "Although tradition and societal values are important, they cannot be given so much weight that they alone will justify a discriminatory statutory classification."
