According to a USA Today/CNN/Gallup Poll completed March 23, President Bush's job approval rating fell to an all-time low of 45%. This was a precipitous drop from the previous week's 52%. It was little reported, however, that the latest poll had a disproportionate number of Democratic respondents. "In this survey, 37% said they were Democrats and 32% said they were Republicans," noted USA Today. "Last week, 32% said they were Democrats and 35% said they were Republicans."

Nonetheless, USA Today tried to spin the poll as a denunciation of the President's signing of the Terri Schiavo bill. Yet, the poll showed "the largest drop for Bush came among men, self-described conservatives and churchgoers," and that discontent was focused on Bush's handling of economic issues. Human Events readers will recall that one of the most notable gestures the President has made recently in this area was refusing to rule out lifting the income cap on payroll taxes-even after he vowed he would not raise payroll taxes as a part of Social Security reform.
