Does your state pay more in taxes to the federal government than it gets back in federal spending?

Each year the Tax Foundation publishes a report comparing the total federal taxes paid in the previous year by taxpayers in each state and the total amount of federal spending in that state.

In its analytical model, the foundation discounts the 17% of federal spending that cannot be allocated by state (interest payments, foreign aid, etc.), and makes adjustments to account for federal deficits and surpluses.

This year’s report is based on the numbers for fiscal year 2002.

The Tax Foundation’s full report, "Federal Tax Burdens and Expenditures by State-Which States Gain Most from Federal Fiscal Operations," is available on their website at www.taxfoundation.org.
