Estrada Filibuster Exposes Democrats' Power Siege

I believe the Democrats know that they cannot push their warped agenda into law without the help of crooked judges ["Democrats Filibuster Estrada for No Good Reason," HUMAN EVENTS, February 17, page 5].

They want judges who will write law on the bench, not interpret what is already written. An example is the mess that happened in New Jersey during the November elections. They realized they were going to lose, so they changed the rules, with the help of the state supreme court.

It is a sad day in America when our elected Congress acts like a bunch of spoiled school kids. The will and the good of the American people plays second fiddle to the power-grab of the Democrats.

It's really quite simple. The voters in this country have said no to the liberal agenda of the left. It started in 1994. The power of the vote will prevail. Seems like a little common sense would reveal to the left that their agenda is wrong for America.

Duplicitous French Thwart U.S. Interests

The French ["Forget About France . . . ," HUMAN EVENTS, February 17, page 1] are in bed with the Iraqi government with contracts to the tune of $50 billion. They have helped Saddam in his efforts to conceal and evade, but have been caught.

Those who live in the dark, when exposed to the light, do everything they can to crawl back into the dark. France is trying to stay there along with its company of Germany, Russia, China and Belgium.

Our government needs to continue to expose these strange bedfellows.

Charen Book Similar To Hollander's Work

Mona Charen's new book ["Mona Charen Exposes Menace of Senseless Liberals," HUMAN EVENTS, February 17] calls to mind an earlier work by Prof. Paul Hollander.

In Political Pilgrims Hollander catalogued the na??¯vet??© of Westerners who could see no evil in the blood-stained regimes of Stalin, Mao and of course Fidel Castro.

The many Western admirers and apologists who traveled to China, Cuba, East Germany or the Sandinista's Nicaragua were all confident that they had "seen the future, and it works." Of course, the Communists did everything they could to depict the West, particularly the United States, as a "bad place"-often with unintended and comical results. Soviet propagandists eventually pulled the film The Grapes of Wrath from distribution after rank-and-file Russians marveled at America, where even the poor people owned their own pick-up trucks!

-Brad O'Brien, Fort Sam Houston, Tex.

Great article. I am old enough to remember all of it. Liberals are "useful idiots." I grew up reading Ayn Rand and conservative books. They were a great vaccination against the socialistic bleeding-heart propaganda. The central Valley of California is very conservative agricultural people . . . but San Francisco and Los Angeles outvote us every time. We are planning to move out of state unless the Recall Davis movement works.

Coulter Accurately Surveys Fifth-Column Bolsheviks

It is now clear that "liberals" are part of the fifth column ["Casting-Couch Bolsheviks," HUMAN EVENTS, February 17, page 6]. They are literally asking for the smoking gun that conservatives are trying to prevent Iraq from using. Liberals are willfully blinded by their own narrow and na??¯ve lifestyles and are incapable of perceiving threats to America and her allies.

As for Sen. Teddy Kennedy's comments, he doesn't seem to get it. The bridge has already been crossed by our enemies. We won't ever get to the point of crossing the bridges when all we do is flap our gums, Mr. Senator, sir.

These CAVEs (Citizens Against Virtually Everything) who are first cousins to the NIMBYs (Not In My BackYard) cannot discern a threat even after we have been hit, let alone one before the event.

September 11 was the catalyst for bringing the world to where it is today: the brink of war. We have leaders of the ilk of Winston Churchill who are able to perceive threats to our way of life long before it raises its head. Thank God for President George W. Bush.

I love Ann's columns. I follow them religiously. Keep up the great work.

Greatly Appreciates Joe Foss Obituary

I was glad to see HUMAN EVENTS ran a nice story on Joe Foss ["Joe Foss, Outspoken Conservative, R.I.P.," January 13, page 26]. When Joe passed away January 1, I checked the local liberal rag the next day. Zip. There was not one word about Joe.

I expected a brief mention. Instead the paper ran a full-page fluff-puff story about John Edwards running for President. Perhaps I should not be surprised. After all, media left types have a different set of heroes than the rest of us. Joe Foss deserved a lot better than this.

Another Side Of Benedict Arnold

I saw your article in this week's paper ["Benedict Arnold and Friends," HUMAN EVENTS, January 27, page 26] and would like you to remember that Benedict Arnold for years was a true patriot. He was a leader in Quebec campaign with its privations early in the war.

He won the battle of Valcour Island, which held off Burgoyne for a year. He was castigated for this by Congress instead of being given a medal (strictly politics although esteemed highly by General Washington).

He, single-handedly, disobeying orders by the milquetoast, Horatio Gates, won the battle of Saratoga, which prevented the colonies from being severed by control of the Hudson. Gates had a medal stuck in his honor by Congress and Arnold failed to receive a promotion.

Instead he was sent to Philadelphia where a convincing female Tory swayed him after repeated disgraces to the Loyalist side and made him forget his principles. (This was not the first time in history that a female accomplished this purpose.)

An ungrateful Congress, swayed by sycophants, failed to promote and honor this true patriot who did so much for his country.
