A 15-year-old boy in the United Kingdom was arrested at his home after criticizing a local politician in social media posts. The incident is the latest in concerns over free speech in the country.

The teenager, identified as Fraser, woke up to four West Midlands Police officers at his door early one morning in August. A Reform UK activist who had campaigned for Nigel Farage, Fraser was taken into custody after complaining online about a Conservative councillor on Wolverhampton City Council.

“I just remember waking up in my room with these four people around me. They were all in uniform,” Fraser said, according to The Telegraph. “I asked them: ‘why are you here?’”

Fraser had published several posts on Facebook criticizing Conservative councillor Simon Bennett. In one post, he complained about Bennett’s decision to wear shorts and a T-shirt in a meeting. IN another post, he edited a photo of the councillor to add bunny ears, captioning it: “Nibble… nibble… crunch… crunch Can you hear it? That’s the sound of a rabbit devouring the last remaining shreds of Wolverhampton Conservatives’ credibility.”

Police searched Fraser in the street in front of his neighbors, seized his electronic devices, and took him to a police station. Officers collected his DNA and fingerprints, and took his mugshot. His shoes were taken, and he was put in a “freezing cold cell” without his parents. Officers searched his bedroom before the boy was ultimately released on bail.

The arrest has fueled concerns over so-called “hate crimes” in the UK. Fraser’s legal team argued that his posts amounted to “plainly political advocacy” rather than any “threat or private campaign of intimidation.” The Telegraph reported that Fraser’s lawyers accused the police of acting disproportionately, planning to sue for “wrongful arrest” and “false imprisonment.”

“I would say my arrest was politically motivated,” Fraser said. “I can’t quite believe what’s happened to me. I would like an apology from the police. But I doubt they will give me one.”

The Free Speech Union, which took up Fraser’s case and secured him a lawyer, condemned the arrest.

“Four police officers arriving to arrest a 15-year-old boy over a political Facebook post is a shocking overreach,” the organization said. “This is not an isolated overreaction. It fits a pattern we see again and again: politicians reporting online criticism to the police rather than answering it.”

“For a child to be arrested at home, interrogated, stripped of his devices, left waiting weeks to learn his fate and investigated for a ‘hate crime’ is not proportionate policing of a minor. This investigation needs to end immediately,” the group added.
