The suspected terrorist co-pilot, Hamam al-Hammami, allegedly attacked a fellow pilot with an axe several times and then sent the plane into a nose dive in what has been referred to as a terrorist attack. The plane dropped several thousand feet within a minute before passengers were able to storm the cockpit, subdue al-Hammami, and take control of the airplane. The incident came a week before the anniversary of the October 7, 2023 Hamas terror attacks.
A LinkedIn profile with al-Hammami's name said that he worked at Oman Air for several years but left in February 2025, according to CNN, which reported the profile was deleted. He was reportedly removed from flight training after being flagged for extremist views and then given a different position at Oman Air.
On his LinkedIn, there were two posts that were published about nine hours after the incident took place. The posts were clips of cockpits that were filmed in a Boeing 737 Max aircraft, which is the type of aircraft that was subject to the attempted terror attack.
The video then showed more planes from the Israeli airline El Al and one from another Israeli airline, Arkia. The video then ends with a photo of Ayman al-Zawahiri, who was the leader of al Qaeda. A photo of Humam Khalil Abu-Mulal al-Balawi was also shown. Abu-Mulal al-Balawi killed 9 American CIA officers in a 2009 suicide bombing.
A second post was an AI-generated image of Mecca, Medina, and Jerusalem linked together by a trail, and an Islamic poem was read in the background of the image.
In deleted posts on X, al-Hammami railed against mixed-gender workplaces and said that they corrupted women. “How many respectable, religious girls have been ruined in mixed-gender work environments and manipulated?” a 2022 post said.
Those in the investigation have said that indications point to al-Hamami acting alone in the terrorist act, per the New York Times.
The UAE Attorney General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi has said that al-Hammami “attempted to carry out a terrorist act. The co-pilot began executing his plan during the flight, attacking the captain inside the flight deck using a crash axe and attempting to take control of the aircraft’s flight controls."
