An Egyptian asylum seeker in the United Kingdom who was convicted of raping a 14-year-old schoolgirl has been ordered to be deported after an immigration judge rejected his claim that he is bisexual.

27-year-old Karam Majdi argued during his asylum appeal that he could not be returned to Egypt because he identifies as bisexual and could face persecution if he were sent back. However, an immigration tribunal rejected his appeal, with Judge R. Abdar ruling that his deportation "was and remains in the public interest.” The tribunal also rejected Majdi’s claims that he had relationships with men, finding that those claims were unsupported.

“I am satisfied that the appellant has failed to rebut the presumption of the appellant posing a danger to the community,” said Abdar. “I am not satisfied that the Appellant is bisexual.”

Majdi now faces deportation after serving half of a seven-year sentence for raping a teenage girl whom he met online. At the time, he had been living in a hostel and traveled to meet the girl. The judge described the attack as “opportunistic,” which left the victim with bruising on her thighs after Majdi pinned her down.

Majdi was sent to a youth offender institution and was released in 2021. During his asylum proceedings, he claimed that his identity documents had been lost at sea while he was traveling to Britain.

The Home Office previously described an assessment of Majdi’s sexuality as “unhelpful,” saying it “sat on the fence” and ultimately resulted in the government accepting his claim that he was bisexual. The Home Office later acknowledged that the decision was a mistake.

Madji also faced additional criminal convictions since his release from prison. These include a conviction and fine for possessing cocaine, as well as offenses for driving without a license and insurance. He is also due to appear in court for possessing cannabis.

“We will do everything in our power to deport this dangerous criminal and will continue to resist all appeals against his deportation,” a Home Office spokesperson said, according to the Daily Mail. “11,733 foreign criminals, including murderers and rapists, have been removed since the last election, a 41 per cent increase on the last two years of the previous government.”
