A 54-year-old suspect, who has not been identified by German police, is in custody. The shooting occurred at the main train platform of the Frankfurt Central Station on Tuesday evening. The 27-year-old man died where he was shot.

“We have applied for an arrest warrant to be issued against the suspect on the urgent suspicion of murder,” said Frankfurt prosecutor’s office spokesman Dominik Mies, according to German broadcaster NTV.

Mies added that police are investigating whether there is any relationship between the two men but said they have no information to report yet.

The killing transpired right in front of other travelers who were preparing to board a train. "It's really frightening that something like this happens in the middle of the railway station," a student from Frankfurt who was on her way to Munich told DPA, according to Yahoo News.

The prosecutor’s office has confirmed that the accused snuck up to his target and shot him in the back of the head.

When he had shot his victim once, the man fell to the ground. The accused then shot him two more times in the head before running away.

But German police successfully tracked down the individual before he could board another train and flee the city.

The prosecutor’s office revealed that the suspected murder weapon has been seized and that the accused lives in the German state of Baden-Württemberg.

Germany continues to deal with the effects of long-term mass immigration policies that have created open borders and difficult deportations. A Somali man who decapitated and stabbed a man 111 times may be allowed to stay in Germany Muslim protesters recently demanded that Germany become an “Islamic state.”.

Antisemitism is also on the rise in the country.
