Yahoo announced Tuesday it has shut down its services in China due to an “increasingly challenging” environment from a “business and legal” standpoint.

As reported by Just the News, all Yahoo services became unavailable to anyone in China on November 1.

“In recognition of the increasingly challenging business and legal environment in China, Yahoo’s suite of services will no longer be accessible from mainland China as of November 1,” the company said in a statement.

The Chinese government requires companies to censor content and language it considers politically sensitive or inappropriate. Yahoo said that “it remains committed to the rights of [its] users and a free and open internet.”

The company’s termination of services in China comes amidst a new law going into effect: the Personal Information Protection Law. The legislation puts tighter restrictions on the sorts of information companies can gather and creates parameters for how it must be stored.
