The EU Parliament on Thursday voted in favor of a non-binding resolution that recognizes trans-identified men as women. The move comes just weeks ahead of the 70th annual UN Commission on the Status of Women, which will be held at the UN headquarters in New York.

The document is a set of recommendations to make to the Council that will be attending the commission from the EU and was passed with a vote of 340 to 141. An additional resolution, which would have said that only biological women can become pregnant, was rejected with a vote of 200 in favor and 233 against.

The adopted text reads, in part, to: "Emphasise the importance of the full recognition of trans women as women, noting that their inclusion is essential for the effectiveness of any gender-equality and anti-violence policies; call for recognition of and equal access for trans women to protection and support services." The document makes no mention of trans men.

The recommendations speak broadly about "gender equality and women's empowerment," as well as "the importance of supporting public policies that promote and support motherhood." It also says that denial of access to abortion is "gender-based violence and a violation of human and fundamental rights."

The vote in favor of claiming men can become women was widely condemned by conservatives and women's rights groups. Cristian Terhes of the Romanian National Conservative Party said it was "insane."

"First, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as well as other international human rights instruments, when talking about the human person, refer explicitly to the 'equal rights of men and women.' There are no other sex-based categories than men and women when we refer to a human person," he said, per Irish outlet Gript.

"The EU Parliament's vote to recognize 'trans women' (biological males) as women for all purposes, including access to women's shelters, is a dangerous betrayal and damaging to society," said Genspect. "Endangers women's safety: Allows potentially abusive men into vulnerable spaces like domestic violence refuges, exposing survivors to further harm and trauma. Erodes women's rights and dignity:

"Strips away sex-based protections, treating women as interchangeable with their oppressors and showing contempt for female-specific needs. Denies biological reality: Ignores that sex is immutable—men cannot become women—promoting lies that undermine truth, science, and rational policy-making. This isn't progress, it's a huge step backwards for women's rights and the protection of vulnerable children and young adults."

Declaring that men can become women and giving them all the protections under the law that women has dilutes protections for actual women. Men are suddenly housed in women's prisons, women's domestic abuse shelters, their crimes are counted as women's crimes, and they are identified as women in legal activity.
