On Saturday, the team captain for the Luton Town soccer team in England, Tom Lockyer collapsed onto the field after going into cardiac arrest and is currently listed in a "stable" condition in the hospital.

In a post on X, the club confirmed that Lockyer had "suffered cardiac arrest on the pitch, but was responsive by the time he was taken off on the stretcher."

"He received further treatment inside the stadium, for which we once again thank the medical teams from both sides," the statement continued. "Tom was transferred to hospital, where we can reassure supporters that he is stable and currently undergoing further tests with his family at his bedside. We would like to thank everyone for their support, concern, and loving messages for Locks."

In a follow-up post on Sunday, the team said it is "unable to provide a running commentary on his situation and request that all media please wait for any updates to be released via the club’s official channels when the time is right."

According to ESPN, The Premier League match between Luton and Bournemouth was tied 1-1 at the time Lockyer fell to the ground. Team manager Rob Edwards immediately called for medical attention, and he was carted off the field with applause from the crowd.

Officials decided to abandon the game not long after. In a statement on X, the Premier League said, "The Premier League match between Bournemouth and Luton has been abandoned due to a player medical incident." It added, "Our thoughts are with Tom Lockyer and all players involved in today’s match."

In May, Lockyer spent five days in the hospital after he collapsed during a match against Coventry City at Wembley Stadium. It was discovered he had an atrial fibrillation, which causes the heart to beat too fast preventing the heart from refilling with blood before pumping it through the body again. He subsequently underwent surgery to fix it and was cleared to play again before the start of the season.
