The gay men, aged 29 and 33, were returning home from a celebration of German Unity Day in the northwestern city of Bremen, Germany when about 10 Arab men started insulting them and shouting homophobic abusive language in Arabic.
Some of the Arab men punched the gay men after the 29-year old man attempted to film the incident. The Arab men then ran away. Paramedics treated the gay man on the street, then took him to the hospital. Both men suffered minor injuries, DPA international reported.
Police have opened a criminal investigation on suspicion of incitement to hatred and causing grievous bodily harm. The state security unit has taken over the investigation since homophobic offences are listed as hate crimes in Germany.
German Unity Day is a national holiday to celebrate Germany’s reunification of East and West Germany on October 3, 1990.
Police are asking for witnesses to come forward who can provide any information about the incident.
X users reacted to the news of the attack online, placing blame on Germany's immigration system.
"I am a gay man. I know exactly where I can live freely. Two men attacked in Germany by a group of Arab men shouting homophobic abuse in Arabic. This is not random. It is what happens when you import people from cultures where homosexuality is still a crime. Western values keep gay men alive. Open borders from the most anti-gay regions on earth do the opposite. The same people who call this 'compassion' are not our friends," one user with the account name "Alex" said.
