Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez believes his nation, and the west at large, "needs migrants." A region of Spain that borders Morocco has been overrun with more than 60,000 migrants in just a few days as the leader of Ceuta has begged for military aid to keep them at bay. He wrote the op-ed in The New York Times as his government granted mass amnesty to some 500,000 migrants inhabiting the Iberian nation.
Across Europe, from the UK, to France, to Germany, there have been Islamic terror attacks aimed at Christians, Jews, and the LGBTQ community. Christmas markets have been targeted, night clubs, and airports. Not even soccer fans have been left alone by those Muslim migrants who would rather see the West burn than seek to embrace values of openness and loving they neighbor.
Sanchez's reasoning is akin to that of American Democrats, saying that these migrants "care for aging parents, work at small and large companies, harvest the food that's on the table," that they're part of your community." As such, he reasons, they should have legal status in their western nation of choice, even as they broke the laws of that nation by crossing the borders and taking up residence illegally.
"So what should we do with these people?" he wrote in the Times back in February, taking aim at American President Donald Trump. "Some leaders have chosen to hunt them down and deport them through operations that are both unlawful and cruel." When it comes to his government's plan to legalize their status, Sanchez claims that there are two reasons, the first being "a moral one."
"It is our duty to become the welcoming and tolerant society that our own relatives would have hoped to find on the other side of our borders. His second reason is that "The west needs people." He cites population decline and stagnation, saying that unless nations "embrace migration, they will experience a sharp demographic decline that will prevent them from keeping their economies and public services afloat." He determines that "The only option to avoid decline is to integrate migrants in the most orderly and effective way possible."
He admitted "it won't be easy," but that's a drastic understatement for the scenes comes out of Ceuta, where thousands upon thousands of migrants stormed across the land border, many being trampled to death, while others too to the sea and swam up to the shore. They thronged onto the beaches and into the towns, clashing with police. The leader of Ceuta asked for help, but he's faced with a leader who thinks having vast numbers of Muslim migrants enter the nation with nothing, intent on taking whatever they find, who have no respect for the laws and values of the nation's population, is a good thing.
"MAGA-style leaders may say that our country can't handle taking in so many migrants," Sanchez wrote, just months ahead of the invasion, “that this is a suicidal move, the desperate act of a collapsing country. But don't let them fool you. Spain is booming."
He goes on to say that "what is working for us can work for others. The time has come for leaders to speak clearly to their citizens about the dilemma we all face. We, as Western nations, must choose between becoming closed and impoverished societies or open and prosperous ones." Then he has the audacity to say "Growth or retreat: Those are the two options before us. And by growth, I'm not talking only about material gain, but also our spiritual development."
