According to the UK Ministry of Defence on Wednesday, a British counter-uncrewed aerial systems unit intercepted and shot down multiple drones in Iraqi airspace overnight. The drones were reported to be heading toward coalition forces operating in the region.
At the same time, British fighter aircraft carried out defensive air patrols. RAF F-35B and Typhoon jets conducted sorties over Qatar and Jordan, supported by Voyager air-to-air refueling aircraft. The flights were part of ongoing defensive operations in regional airspace.
The UK is also expanding its air presence in the Gulf. Four additional Typhoon fighter jets are being deployed to Qatar to support defensive operations. The aircraft are expected to reinforce the existing British presence already operating in the area.
Meanwhile, hundreds of personnel have been positioned elsewhere in the region. The Ministry of Defence confirmed that 400 additional UK personnel are supporting air defence activities across British bases in Cyprus.
British counter-drone specialists have also been deployed to the region to work alongside partner forces. Some of these teams previously worked closely with Ukrainian experts and are now assisting partners on counter-drone operations and defensive capabilities.
Diplomatic and defense coordination is also underway.
The UK Defence Secretary recently met with Cyprus’ defense minister to discuss strengthening air defenses, while British officials are engaging with Gulf Cooperation Council ambassadors about further regional support.
