A Bangladeshi migrant who raped and impregnated a 10-year-old girl in Italy was given a light sentence after claiming he was in a "relationship" with the child and his lawyers said there was "no violence." The man was 24-year-old at the time.

The incident took place in Collio, Lombardy at a migrant center and the girl was also a migrant, from Africa. Her mother, who lived next door to the man, said that she noticed her daugher was acting "strange," cold and detached. The girl told her mother what happened. Prior to the rape, the mother had left her child alone with the man.

The girl was taken to a hospital where the pregnancy was confirmed and her baby was aborted. The mother and child were then moved from the migrant shelter to a safe location in Lombardy, GB News reported.

The charges against the man were reclassified from "aggravated sexual assault against a minor" to "sexual acts with a child," and he was only sentenced to a five-year prison term.

The man did not deny having impregnated the girl and DNA evidence confirmed that he had done it. But he claimed he had not raped her, despite being 14 years her senior and her being just a child. He did say he regretted it.

Italian lawmakers were horrified by the outcome, with MP Simona Bordonali of the Lega party saying "The mere five-year sentence handed down to a person responsible for the atrocious and unspeakable violence against a child leaves me stunned." Her colleague Matteo Salvini said the sentenced was "appalling" and "unacceptable."
