The British television series “The Teacher” is drawing attention for its latest season that involves a storyline of a nonbinary student who takes her own life after being misgendered by her teacher.

The show features a character named Dee Rainford-Thomas, a student who identifies as nonbinary and clashes with drama teacher Helen Simpson, the newly promoted head of drama at Cheetham Hall. The character is depicted in the series as being misgendered and “deadnamed” by the teacher, as tensions between the two rise.

The storyline escalates as the teacher also becomes involved in disputes with other students, including one who describes herself as an ally of “Dee.” At one point, after an exchange takes place where the teacher tells Dee she should “kill herself” if she cannot stand up for herself, the student proceeds to overdose on pills.

The synopsis states: “A sinister grudge match quickly develops between teacher and pupil and, when Dee takes her own life following an argument with Helen, Cressida resorts to blackmail to make Helen pay for her 'outdated' views."

Director Dominic Leclerc said the storyline was intended to explore generational differences in perspectives on gender.

"The story explores queer culture from the perspective of younger and older generations," Leclerc said. "The impact of words on representation and identity is a cultural conversation that is alive right now and we wanted to continue that in a sensitive way."

"From the very beginning we were looking at ideas around gender identity and how young people have brought pronouns into our culture. The story is nuanced; we didn’t want to pit our groups of characters against each other with a single point of view because that’s not real,” he added. "The way pronouns are used is an ongoing conversation, it’s not something everyone suddenly gets right, and addressing it takes away any fear or trepidation."
