ICE had been conducting operations amid what he described as “one of the largest deployments” of federal agents in the area. “ICE was conducting operations. We know that they’ve got these massive deployment of agents that are up there, massive deployment of agents that are on the ground conducting operations, one of the largest deployments,” he said.
He described what followed as the central issue in the case. “Rather than step out of the vehicle when they ask her to, she hits the gas pedal and attempts to floor into one of the officers who’s standing directly in front of her,” Posobiec said.
The footage shows the driver braking briefly before accelerating again. “She’s on the brakes in this photo, but we know in the very next instant she hits the gas pedal, and we’ve got the video there,” he said. “He then makes the move to defend himself.”
Addressing questions about use-of-force standards, Posobiec said, “People have asked me before, what are the rules of engagement for ICE officers, for any officers in these situations. The rules of engagement are the rules of engagement. These are not anything that supersedes your right to self-defense.”
“You always have the right to defend yourselves when conducting operations, and that’s exactly what this officer did here,” he said. “He acted upon training.” He added, “Looks like she may have actually hit his leg, and this is an attempted murder.”
He added, “You cannot blockade or impede operations... You can’t block ICE operations, and then you can’t run over ICE officers. These are illegal actions.”
The Department of Homeland Security confirmed the shooting, with DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin stating that ICE officers were conducting “targeted operations when rioters began blocking ICE officers and one of these violent rioters weaponized her vehicle, attempting to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them—an act of domestic terrorism.”
McLaughlin said, “An ICE officer, fearing for his life, the lives of his fellow law enforcement and the safety of the public, fired defensive shots… The alleged perpetrator was hit and is deceased.”
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said the woman had blocked Portland Avenue between 33rd and 34th Streets and that “at some point, a federal law enforcement officer approached her on foot and the vehicle began to drive off. At least two shots were fired.”
The woman was later pronounced dead at Hennepin County Medical Center.
Following the shooting, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey issued a statement demanding ICE leave the city. “To ICE, get the f*ck out of Minneapolis. We do not want you here,” Frey said. He called federal claims of self-defense “bullsh*t” and said he had “seen the video myself.”
Responding to those remarks on air, Posobiec said, “Jacob Frey, the mayor up there, is committing sedition when he says that ICE should get out of Minneapolis. No, I’m sorry, Jacob Frey, Minneapolis is United States territory.”
“You are a local mayor,” Posobiec added. “You do not have rights that supersede the federal government conducting lawful behavior.”
The incident comes as DHS confirmed earlier this week that “the largest DHS operation ever is happening right now in Minnesota,” with reports indicating roughly 2,000 federal personnel deployed statewide.
