The outlet reported that CIA agents as well as agents from the US Drug Enforcement Agency could be sent to Mexico to beef up intervention with the cartels. Former Mexican foreign minister, Jorge Castaneda told the outlet, “You can certainly see more US boots on the ground, although not necessarily military boots.”
Sheinbaum said on Tuesday that Mexico and the US should "collaborate" to take out the cartels, but that the countries should keep to their own territories. The report from the Sun indicates a departure from that sentiment.
This comes after US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said earlier this week that "all options are on the table" when it comes to taking out the cartels in Mexico, as they have been designated by US President Donald Trump as a terrorist organization.
"We've been securing other people's border for a very long time. The military is orienting shifting toward an understanding of homeland defense on our sovereign territorial border. That is something we will do and do robustly," Hegseth said on Friday.
The executive order that Trump signed after coming into office designating the cartels as terrorist organizations stated, "The Cartels have engaged in a campaign of violence and terror throughout the Western Hemisphere that has not only destabilized countries with significant importance for our national interests but also flooded the United States with deadly drugs, violent criminals, and vicious gangs."
This also comes after Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China because of the amount of illegal immigration taking place at the northern and southern border along with the influx of fentanyl into the US.
