KENNY CODY: The Hunter Biden and Pete Hegseth dichotomy sums up the GOP's problem

When push comes to shove, for some reason, the GOP always wants to be the party that wants to get run over by our opposition while caving to the left even though we have power.

On December 1st, Americans were confronted with an unprecedented abuse of presidential authority. As President Joe Biden entered the final stretch of his presidency, he took a step that Democrats had feared and Republicans had anticipated. Biden pardoned his son, 54-year-old Hunter Biden, who had been found guilty of three felony tax offenses, six misdemeanor tax offenses, and multiple gun charges, including lying about his status as a drug addict and his unlawful ownership of a firearm. Biden dismissed the Department of Justice's investigation of his son as politically motivated and vowed to shield his family from further scrutiny.

Not only did Biden pardon his son for the specific tax and gun crimes he had been charged with, but he was also rewarded with a blanket pardon for all federal crimes dating back to 2014 when Hunter Biden joined the executive board of Burisma. This Ukrainian holding company prioritizes energy exploration and investments in the country, and Biden had been heavily involved in their interests during his time on the board. This brought forth claims by Congress and President Donald Trump that sought investigations into the timeline that Hunter may have used his connections to then-Vice President Biden for impermissible benefits to the Biden family.

After repeatedly telling the American people in press conferences that it would never happen and treating any media member who questioned if it would happen as if they were insane, the Biden Administration pulled the wool over the entire country's eyes, and they all fell for it. Congressional Republicans may have anticipated being yet again duped by incompetent tyrants and their puppet masters, but they did nothing about it besides write strongly worded letters.

Rumors are rife that Biden's pardons may not stop with Hunter.

There are whispers that he is considering pardoning individuals such as former Representative Liz Cheney, Dr. Anthony Fauci, and California United States Senator-elect Adam Schiff, potentially to shield them from prosecution by the incoming Trump Administration Department of Justice. Such actions could have far-reaching implications for the future of justice and accountability in our country.

So, while Democrats are protecting Democrats and anyone who has ever helped the Biden Administration, Republicans are still stumbling over their feet to ensure they have enough votes within the United States Senate GOP Conference to confirm Trump appointees, such as Secretary of Defense nominee, Pete Hegseth. Despite never having allegations confirmed, rumors about his alleged alcoholism dispersed by his mother and work colleagues, such as Will Cain, and organizations he has represented, and President-elect Donald Trump's unabashed support for him, Hegseth is still in the crosshairs of the neoconservative wing of the Senate GOP.

U.S. Senators Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins have no votes, which Hegseth must overcome. He can likely only lose one more to give his confirmation a chance to survive. Most conservatives have raised concerns due to ambiguous statements from Iowa United States Senator Joni Ernst, who showed no full-throated support for Hegseth after meeting with him on December 4th. She later released a statement on December 9th that she had "encouraging conversations" with Hegseth and that she "support[s] Pete through this process."

Herein lies the problem with Republicans in Washington D.C. and America abroad. When push comes to shove, for some reason, the GOP always wants to be the party that wants to get run over by our opposition while caving to the left even though we have power. When the opposition is in the White House and controls one or both chambers of the United States Congress, any onlooker would think that those like Ernst or South Carolina United States Senator Lindsey Graham were some fire-breathing conservative who is ready to take on the left and go to battle for MAGA. Yet, whenever they have power, which the 119th Congress unilaterally will, with a Republican trifecta, they constantly falter and cave to their enemies.

Pete Hegseth should be a no-brainer for his confirmation as Secretary of Defense. Hardly any man in the United States has advocated for his fellow service member like Hegseth has in non-profits, on television, and in his punditry throughout the last two decades. There is no excuse for any Republican United States Senator to oppose Hegseth's nomination, but the battle is on because the GOP is weak.

The remnants of the neoconservative establishment that President Donald Trump and his base have sought to destroy still have a hold on Washington, which is why getting Hegseth through confirmation is so essential to the America First movement.

Actual conservatives in the Senate GOP need to stand up and confirm Hegseth to send a message to the warmongers, the neoconservatives, and the left that we will unify to rout out the corruption in D.C. and the United States federal government.
