UN demands US keep funding Gaza aid agency found to have ties to Hamas

The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) is the "backbone" of aid in Gaza despite bombshell reports revealing 10 percent of UNWRA's Gaza employees are connected with terrorist organizations and 12 staffers were directly involved in the October 7 massacre.

"Yesterday I met with donors to listen to their concerns and to outline the steps we are taking to address them," he said to the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People on Wednesday.

"I underscored the importance of keeping UNRWA's vital work going to meet the dire needs of civilians in Gaza, and to ensure its continuity of services to Palestine refugees in the occupied West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria," he said.

"UNRWA is the backbone of all humanitarian response in Gaza. I appeal to all member states to guarantee the continuity of UNRWA's life-saving work."

UNWRA lost funding from multiple governments including the US after they became aware of the revelations in the reports provided by Israel to the Biden administration.

On Sunday, Democrats in Washington DC called for funding to be reinstated to the agency at their state assembly along with calling for a ceasefire and condemning Israel for its "disproportionate response" to the October 7 attack.
