JACQUELINE TOBOROFF: The Left is eating its own for the sake of Jew hatred

Disgraced former New York governor Andrew Cuomo has taken a position that is splintering the Democrat party. After nearly a month of sustained Jew hatred hijacking postsecondary institutions which have endangered Jewish students, disrupted classes, wasted taxpayers’ money, and repelled donors, Cuomo said, “These threats are criminal and cannot be tolerated.”

Not tolerating anti-semitism, it turns out, is not part of the Democrat Party platform. Now, certain Democrat elected officials who condemn Hamas, or even support Israel, are paying a price in approval ratings.

A March 2023 Gallup Poll finds Democrats have an increasing affinity toward the Palestinians. Their sympathies lie with Palestinians by 49 percent versus with Israelis by 38 percent. This isn’t remotely surprising. Hamas sympathizers are in our government, schools, and bureaucracy. Education has been compromised by pro-terror organizations like Students for Justice in Palestine. And mainstream media as well as social media are heavily influenced by foreign bad actors targeting Western values. And this poll is from before the October 7th Hamas attack on Israel.

The October 7th has done nothing to dull these pro-terror sentiments; if anything, it’s inflamed them. The pro-Hamas contingent of the Democrat party is downright furious Israel has the nerve to defend itself and try and free hostages. Going after Hamas is genocide, they say. It is also colonialism, they say.

Democrats, even when they support policies that would have the unintended consequence of helping Islamist terror organizations, feel the wrath of the pro-Islamist terrorist contingency for the slightest infraction of verbalizing understanding for Israel.

President Joe Biden is a great example. He has given $6 billion to Iran which finances Hamas. He has given $100 million in humanitarian assistance for the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank which will likely end up in the hands of Hamas. Yet, his approval rating among Democrats has taken a beating. It has dropped 11 percentage points this past month since he has vocalized support for Israel.

As of October 26, a Gallup Poll shows Biden’s approval is at 37%, the worst review of his presidency from his own party. Following the Hamas attack, Biden promised “rock solid and unwavering” support for Israel from the U.S. But Biden has faced criticism from some members of his party, like Representative Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar, who would prefer rock solid and unwavering support for the fictional place called “Palestine.”

On October 25, the House voted to pass a resolution affirming U.S. support for Israel in its ongoing war with Hamas. That made the group now dubbed the “Hamas Caucus” mad. Nine Democrats voted against the measure: Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar (of course), but also Reps. Cori Bush, Jamaal Bowman, Andre Carson, Al Green, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Summer Lee, and Delia Ramirez. In addition, six Democrats, including Progressive Caucus Chair Pramila Jayapal, voted "present."

The White House clearly knows it’s facing dissension, which is why Kamala harris recently unveiled the “country's first National Strategy to Counter Islamophobia.” The purpose of this “national strategy” is clear: to redirect attention away from the real problem of anti-semitism while also making it difficult if not impossible to speak frankly about the real problem of Islamism

This “strategy” has done nothing to rescue Biden’s fortunes, nor has it helped other Leftists who have the sense not to openly support literal terrorists. This is true of not just Cuomo, but also New York City Mayor Eric Adams. By any reasonable standard, Adams’ radicalism shouldn’t be up for debate. He’s pushed for non-citizens to vote. He’s not only fought “Islamophobia,” but arguably increased the presence of Islamism in NYC by allowing mosques to broadcast the call to prayer on loudspeakers. None of this helped him when it came to Israel.

On October 14th, Adams gave a speech that impressed a lot of Jews (they are desperate to believe someone has their back, or at least, isn’t trying to kill them). However, it was just a speech. Only words. Nevertheless, for the mere crime of saying words that are supportive of Israel, Adams is now in hot water with local Muslim leaders. This, despite the fact that Adams has done absolutely nothing to push back on the rabid protests that have rocked New York, and which have led to assaults on Jewish people, Jewish businesses, and Jewish students like those at Cooper Union who were locked in their libraries as a baying mob tried to get in and attack them for the simple crime of being Jewish.

Adams allowed the pro-Hamas contingent all this, and they still can’t accept him saying words supportive of Israel? You have to wonder what would be enough. Maybe, like their cries of “from the river to the sea,” the reality that Democrats’ increasingly pro-terror constituency want is one in which all evidence that America ever supported Jews, or tolerated their presence, or was built on values they helped create, is wiped out.
