JIM NELLES: Trump's third indictment latest move in attempt to silence the MAGA movement

The left may forget, but the Internet remembers.

President Donald Trump was indicted on criminal charges late Tuesday afternoon by a federal grand jury in special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into alleged election interference. In a development that caused unprecedented giddiness and excitement on left-leaning television outlets, “Mr. Trump was charged with: conspiracy to defraud the United States; conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding; obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding; and conspiracy against rights,” per CNN.

Mr. Trump is due in federal court on Thursday afternoon and Jack Smith has stated that he wants a speedy trial, per MSNBC.

This marks the third time Mr. Trump has been indicted. Jack Smith charged Mr. Trump in the classified documents case, and George Soros-backed prosecutor Alvin Bragg charged him with 34 different felonies.

These charges come just one day after former Hunter Biden business associate, Devon Archer, provided closed-door testimony on a transcribed interview with congressional staffers, moving that story off the front page.

Fans of Steve Bannon’s television show and podcast, “The War Room,” know that he is fond of saying, “there are no conspiracies, but no coincidences.” However, could there be a plot, even an uncoordinated plot to silence the Make America Great Again movement prior to the 2024 election? It is hard to ignore what has happened since the raid on Mar-A-Largo in August 2022.

In addition to the current indictments, President Trump is also under investigation in Georgia for allegedly attempting to interfere with the 2020 election results, and may be charged in Fulton County, using Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) statute.

These charges against the former president are serving to further solidify the rift in America between MAGA Republicans who believe there is a two-tired system of justice, and the leftists who now feel that trying to jail a political opponent and the leading candidate to challenge the sitting president is what our founders meant by equal justice under the law.

But how quickly the left forgets what it said when then candidate Trump threatened to prosecute and jail Hillary Clinton for her classified documents issues during the 2016 presidential campaign. The left may forget, but the Internet remembers.

CNN quickly wrote that Trump’s comments sounded “disappointingly familiar to those living under authoritarian regimes,” and then went on to compare Mr. Trump to the leaders of Russia, Chile, Egypt, North Korea, and Zimbabwe. BuzzFeed and The New Yorker did the same.

One must take pause to wonder if Attorney General Merrick Garland is simply seeking revenge against the former president for keeping him off of the Supreme Court.

It isn’t just President Trump who is being pursued by rogue prosecutors and special counsels. Let us look at the political “lawfare” being waged against the MAGA movement.

In November 2021, Steve Bannon was indicted by a federal grand jury on two counts of “contempt of Congress stemming from his failure to comply with a subpoena issued by the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 breach of the U.S. Capitol.”

Then, in June 2022, former White House advisor Peter K. Navarro was indicted by a federal grand jury on two counts of “contempt of Congress stemming from his failure to comply with a subpoena issued by the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 breach of the United States Capitol.”

The attack on MAGA went beyond legal action taken by the Department of Justice. Dan Bongino, a long-time vocal supporter of President Trump, lost his show “Unfiltered” on Fox News, due to “contractual disagreements.” Bongino’s show on Fox Nation will cease to exist, and his radio show will no longer be carried by Fox Nation, according to The Hill. Bongino stated that “there is no acrimony…we just couldn’t come to terms on an extension.” However, as a person who conducts negotiations for a living, I know how easy it is to sabotage a negotiation to ensure that no agreement is reached. It isn’t that hard.

Then, in April 2023, Fox News took Tucker Carlson off the air, suffering a plunge in ratings as a result, per NPR. Since being silenced by Fox News, Carlson has taken to Twitter to provide his fans with monolgues and observations. Fox has reportedly told Carlson’s legal team that he is in breach of his contract and must cease and desist immediately. A source told Axios that “Carlson was told by a senior Fox executive that the network’s goal is to keep him sidelined until 2025,” after the next presidential election. While Carlson is not specifically MAGA, he is one of the most important voices in the conservative movement, perhaps second only to Trump himself.

Last, Navy Veteran political commentator and outspoken MAGA supporter, Jack Posobiec, has been listed as a right-wing extremist by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

It is stunning how many MAGA supporters are under attack and are being canceled, either by lawfare or by being silenced by the media. There may be no conspiracies, but it does seem like there is an effort to silence the MAGA movement prior to the 2024 presidential election. What the left doesn’t understand, is that it only strengthens the movement.
