Obama’s illegal alien sequestration dump

Today brought one of those stories that's almost hard to believe when it comes from a single source - with no offense to the single source in question, McClatchy News:

The federal government released groups of illegal immigrants from custody across the country Monday at the same time the White House was making its case that impending budget cuts would harm efforts to protect the border and enforce federal immigration laws.

Advocates reported ???waves??? of illegal immigrants being released from at least three detention centers in Texas, Florida and Louisiana.

U.S. Immigration Customs and Enforcement confirmed the release of some illegal immigrants Monday night but would not say how many or from which detention centers.

???In order to make the best use of our limited detention resources in the current fiscal climate and to manage our detention population under current congressionally mandated levels, ICE has directed field offices to review the detained population to ensure it is in line with available funding,??? said ICE spokeswoman Gillian Christensen. ???As a result of this review, a number of detained aliens have been released around the country and placed on an appropriate, more cost-effective form of supervised release.???

But confirmation appeared soon enough at the New York Times:

In a highly unusual move, federal immigration officials have released hundreds of detainees from immigration detention centers around the country, an effort to save money as automatic budget cuts loom in Washington, officials said Tuesday.

The government has not dropped the deportation cases against the immigrants, however. The detainees have been freed on supervised release while their cases continue in court, officials said.

But the move angered some Republicans, including Rep. Robert W. Goodlatte of Virginia, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, who said the releases were a political gambit by the Obama administration that undermined the continuing negotiations over comprehensive immigration reform and jeopardized public safety.

???It???s abhorrent that President Obama is releasing criminals into our communities to promote his political agenda on sequestration,??? said Mr. Goodlatte, who is running the House hearings on immigration reform. ???By releasing criminal immigrants onto the streets, the administration is needlessly endangering American lives.???

"Highly unusual."  Yes indeed, it certainly is that.  How about those "waves" of released detainees, New York Times?

Officials did not reveal precisely how many detainees were released or where the releases took place, but immigrants??? advocates around the country have been reporting that hundreds of detainees were freed in numerous locations, including Hudson County, N.J.; Polk County, Texas; Broward County, Fla.; and New Orleans; and from centers in Arizona, Alabama, Georgia and New York.

While immigration officials occasionally free detainees on supervised release, this mass release ??? so many in such a short span of time ??? appears to be unprecedented in recent memory, immigration advocates said.

Wow... the situation is upgraded from "highly unusual" to "unprecedented" in just 11 paragraphs.

We're supposed to believe that none of the people released in these "waves" are dangerous criminals convicted of serious crimes - but the Obama Administration has amply demonstrated that it cannot be trusted.  Which would seem like a rather serious obstacle to the business of orderly republican self-government, but I'm an old-fashioned guy.

Is there any theoretical point at which Obama's willful dereliction of duty - his determination to abuse the power of the State to punish resistance to his tax demands - would bring serious consequences?  He's moving from the absurd, to the outrageous, to the downright dangerous.  Maybe next the President will start ordering sections of the power grid shut down, to hit Americans in flyover country with rolling blackouts unless they petition recalcitrant Republicans to pay the tax ransom.

At least we can console ourselves with the thought that most of these detainees were going to receive amnesty anyway.  That is, after the same government that claims a 2 percent spending cut makes it impossible to monitor them, and the existing bloated level of government spending leaves no money for upgraded border control, tracks them all down and makes them pay back taxes plus a fine.  And then they'll enter the exploding Medicaid division of ObamaCare.  And none of it will increase the deficit by a dime.
