TAMPA, Fla. — As Tampa and the nation brace for Tropical Storm Isaac and Republicans and reporters rearrange their schedules for a shortened national convention, Mitt Romney took the weekend to hit back at the latest attacks fired at him by the Obama-Biden campaign and the president himself.

“It really is sad, isn’t it, with all the issues that America faces for the Obama campaign to continue to stoop to such a low level,” Romney said in a pre-recorded interview run on “Fox News Sunday.” He was referring to the most recent Obama TV spot linking the soon-to-be Republican presidential nominee to Missouri Rep. and U.S. Senate candidate Todd Akin’s controversial “legitimate rape” remarks. Earlier in the week, the president joined the political pile-on when he told the Associated Press that Romney had locked himself into “extreme positions” on economic and social issues.

The Democratic National Committee has also gotten into the act with a new fundraising appeal from Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz saying that Akin’s choice of words is not the real issue but rather, “the real issue is a Republican Party — led by Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan — whose policies on women and their health are dangerously wrong.”

Romney and his wife Ann spent Sunday at their New Hampshire home preparing for the convention in which he will accept nomination for president later this week. But, as warnings about Isaac grew and the convention’s activities for Monday were canceled, Romney issued a statement saying the safety of those in Isaac’s path was of “utmost importance.”
