Polish prime minister Donald Tusk said that police are investigating the circumstances of the attack. President Karol Nawrocki added that he is "deeply concerned by reports of the tragic events.”

"I remain in contact with the relevant authorities and expect a full explanation of the circumstances surrounding these tragic events," Nawrocki said in a post. "The head of the National Security Bureau is on his way to Krakow. The safety of Poles is an absolute priority!"

A witness told Reuters that she ran inside a restaurant when the shooting began and waited for the noise to stop. She later heard a helicopter, which is believed to have been part of the emergency response. The woman said she couldn't leave the area and didn't know how to return to her hotel.

Additionally, a tram in Krakow was shot at from “a passing car,” according to the city. None of the passengers were injured.

Polish police have said: “The perpetrator of the incident in Kraków’s Main Market Square is a citizen of the Republic of Poland. We deny reports that a police officer has died or that officers are searching for another perpetrator. The only known perpetrator is in police custody.”

The main market square, located in the heart of Krakow, was first laid out in 1257 and is one of the city’s most prominent public areas. Polish authorities have not disclosed a motive for the shooting and are investigating whether the attack was an act of terrorism.

US Ambassador Tom Rose commented on the attack, saying, "America stands with Poland at this dark hour as Poland stands with her beloved citizens of Krakow. May the blessed memory of those lost today assuage the grief of those who mourn."

On Saturday, anti-government demonstrations were also held in Krakow.
