Senate Democrats on Wednesday failed twice to pass their legislation to nationalize elections.

The second vote came late Wednesday night when the Senate refused to change the filibuster rules in a 52 to 48 vote, *Just the News* [reports](https://justthenews.com/government/congress/senate-republicans-block-voting-rights-bill-schumer-joining-nays?utm_source=breaking&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=newsletter).

Democratic Sens. Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema came across party lines to vote with the Republicans to keep the filibuster rules, demolishing their party’s attempt to end the 60-vote threshold.

Prior to that vote, Senate Republicans, joined by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, voted against the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act in a 51 to 59 vote. Schumer joined Republicans “in order to enter a motion to reconsider the vote.”
