Washington D.C. lifted its indoor mask mandate for schools and childcare facilities on Tuesday.
The D.C. Public School system now has the option to decide whether or not they want to continue enforcing mask-wearing, Just the News reports.
Lewis Ferebee, the chancellor of the D.C. Public School System, said in a statement that for now, the district will keep the mandate in place.
Ferebee said the district will discuss options with the Washington Teachers’ Union and other groups before coming to a conclusion.
The new guidance also removes the physical distancing recommendations and shortens the length of quarantine requirements for unvaccinated students.
Schools are also only required to notify D.C. Health if they have five or more confirmed cases of the virus in a five day period, instead of reporting every single individual COVID-19 case.
