What to Know About Ukraine: Agriculture

Amid the ongoing Russian invasion in Ukraine, Human Events News compiled a series of fast-facts you should know about the eastern European nation. 

Ukraine is an important agricultural country. According to the Statistical Year Book of Ukraine, via Nation’s Encyclopedia, about 71 percent of the country’s surface is used for agricultural activities. Approximately 80 percent of the agricultural area is arable land. 

Overall, Ukraine ranks: 

  • 1st in Europe in terms of arable land area
  • 3rd in the world by the area of black soil (25% of world's volume)
  • 1st in the world in exports of sunflower and sunflower oil;
  • 2nd in the world in barley production and 4th in barley exports
  • 3rd in production and 4th in exports of corn in the world
  • 4th in production of potatoes in the world
  • 5th in production of rye producer in the world
  • 5th in the world in bee production (75,000 tons)
  • 8th in the world in wheat exports
  • 9th in the world in the production of chicken eggs
  • 16th in the world in cheese exports.

On its own, Ukraine can meet the food needs of 600 million people.
