CULTURE

Welcome Back, Mr. President. Things Have… Changed.

Human Events — the favorite magazine of U.S. President Ronald Reagan, is under new management.

Human Events — President Reagan’s favorite magazine, is under new management.

The Washington Post reported the announcement during the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) 2019.

So what now for the oldest conservative magazine in the United States?

We want to be clear upholding the values and ideas President Reagan found so appealing about Human Events.

But who are we, and what do we stand for?

WHO WE ARE

Will Chamberlain is the publisher of Human Events. A member of the bar in both California and the District of Columbia, Chamberlain has worked as an attorney with the Competitive Enterprise Institute and as a litigation associate at Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan LLP.

Chamberlain graduated from Georgetown University Law Center in 2015, where he was the managing editor of the conservative Georgetown Journal of Law and Public Policy.

You can find his short-form commentary at Twitter and Periscope, under the handle @willchamberlain.

[Human Events has] “aggressive reporting, superb analysis and one of the finest collections of conservative columnists.”

— President Reagan

Raheem Kassam is the former editor-in-chief of Breitbart London, and former senior advisor to Brexit leader Nigel Farage.

Kassam has overseen a number of publications over the past decade, as well being the author of two best-selling books: No Go Zones – How Sharia Law is Coming to a Neighborhood Near You, and Enoch Was Right: Rivers of Blood 50 Years On.

Prior to a career in media and politics, Kassam studied Politics at the University of Westminster in London, England, and founded an organization (Student Rights) which focused on highlighting the threats of radical Islam on university campuses.

Kassam is a Lincoln Fellow at the Claremont Institute, a Writing Fellow at the Middle East Forum, a fellow at the Bow Group, Britain’s oldest conservative think tank, and was previously a Senior Distinguished Fellow at the Gatestone Institute.

WHY HUMAN EVENTS?

Human Events is the prestige brand in conservative media. It is the intellectual high ground of conservatism. It has changed the very nature of the United States for the better for the past 75 years. We intend for it to do the same for the next 75.

Unlike the rest of the media, we think ordinary people should be involved in the process. And in this day and age, conservative publishers struggle to make ends meet with advertising revenue alone. It’s a world of boycotts. To solve these problems, we came up with our first membership program: FOUNDING FATHERS, which will run until June 1st.

If you join as a Founding Father, you get to join a Discord channel with the editors and owners of the site. Hundreds are already with us. You also get exclusive content, offers, and a signed copy of Raheem’s next book. It’s quite the deal.

WHAT DO WE BELIEVE?

The headline of this editorial reads, ‘Things have changed’, and in many ways they’ve changed for the worse.

Anti-semitism has reared its ugly head again – in the ranks of the fringe alt-right and the “woke” left. The United States and its allies are war weary, and risk being outmaneuvered on the world stage by authoritarian regimes like China and Iran.

The abortion debate is still raging, and almost more than anything, the stress on the family unit and community-based life is in rapid and alarming decline. The border is a disaster. Opioids are ravaging the interior of the country.

And perhaps most distressingly, free speech is in peril. The media landscape and the broader culture have shifted markedly to the left. Big tech companies are using their monopoly power to censor conservatives, while indulging the whims of repressive governments around the world. Leftists have embraced “anti-fascist” political violence, while the media turns a blind eye.

In the face of these challenges, we expect the President – and Republican officeholders around the country – to use the lawful means at their disposal to achieve conservative policy goals. Period.

This is no time for “peacetime” Republicans. This is a time for brawlers.

And we are here to brawl.

President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence

PRESIDENT TRUMP?

We told the Washington Post we intend to be a “MAGA-zine.” But we are not sycophants.

Many of the promises of the Trump 2016 campaign have yet to be realized. We will push President Trump and his team to move the ball for the platform he ran on. This is not just about policy; it’s about restoring trust in America’s institutions and keeping faith with the voters who put the President in office.

As far as we’re concerned, President Trump has done a decent job, especially on the economy. But Trump supporters weren’t chanting “CUT THE TAX” at all those 2015/16 rallies. They were chanting “LOCK HER UP”, “DRAIN THE SWAMP”, and “BUILD THE WALL”.

We don’t expect political leaders, not least the President, to arbitrarily jail political adversaries (even if Democrats seem perfectly happy to do so). But “LOCK HER UP” was about more than Hillary Clinton’s crimes; it was symbolic rhetoric that represented a return to the rule of law. For all of President Trump’s “COUP!” and “WITCH HUNT!” tweets, very little has been done about FISA abuse, spying, and other misconduct by high-level FBI and DOJ officials. President Trump and his team must show the nation – and the world – that this sort of behavior is unacceptable in the United States. In other words, heads must roll.

“DRAIN THE SWAMP” was abundantly clear as a policy, and yet the hardest thing to achieve. Dismantling the post World War II administrative state was never going to happen in one fell swoop. But it has scarcely happened at all.

Conservative Inc. has dug its heels in over this, too. Knowing they are very much the same swamp monsters as the left and the so-called “center”. They don’t want to drain the swamp any more than the Obama holdovers in the State Department do, and that has hampered Trump at every turn.

Finally, “BUILD THE WALL.” The border represents the most glaring failure of the President and the Republican Congress.

Frankly, if Trump built just one mile of new border wall before the next election, he’d probably win. But at the time of publication, he hasn’t, which has drawn much ire from the likes of Ann Coulter, formerly a regular on Human Events. In many respects, much of the Trump 2016 base is beginning to feel like this was always the plan — especially given the inability for the President to get this done under a Republican controlled House and Senate.

The fact is, on the facts themselves, President Trump is correct. The United States is indeed experiencing a national crisis and a humanitarian emergency on and within its border. But as of yet, we’ve seen no firm action to solve the problem.

THE ADMINISTRATIVE STATE

There is another crisis that needs addressing: personnel.

Policy is personnel, and personnel is policy. Unfortunately, the MAGA crowd is a mile wide but an inch deep when it comes to placing talent — people — in positions of import.

We’re here to say that Trumpism — whether you want to call it nationalism, populism, or some pejorative term in a desperate attempt to undermine ordinary people — is not going anywhere.

When one of them is knocked down by the left (or even the notional right), or chooses to leave of their own volition, the establishment has 10 candidates to every one MAGA candidate lined up to replace them. This is true in the White House, in the State Department, and all across the country and conservative spectrum. The establishment is simply trying to wait out the “blip” they think Trump represents. They’re wrong.

We’re here to say that Trumpism — whether you want to call it nationalism, populism, or some pejorative term in a desperate attempt to undermine ordinary people — is not going anywhere.

President Trump himself will obviously leave office in 2024 at the latest, but ‘MAGA’ did not start with him, nor will it end with him.

There is a growing array of thinkers, writers, columnists, activists, and professionals who are dedicated to the agenda this President ran on in 2016. You’ll see many of them featured on Human Events in coming weeks and months.

IT’S NOT JUST THE ECONOMY, STUPID

We are here for the long term, and we are here to make it clear: we’re not willing to trade away the hard-won benefits Western civilization has granted us. Not just the basic “conserva-bro” talking points you might think of. There’s more to the West than “muh free markets“.

In fact, it is about time conservatives stopped thinking about people as a unit of production, and started thinking of the implications of the abandonment of the family unit, of neighborliness, and of the community spirit America once led the rest of the world in.

Without the traditional family unit, and without the idea that we as citizens have a duty towards the nation and a duty towards one another: it all means nothing. It is unsustainable.

Other nations around the world have woken up to this. Not least Hungary, which has seen marriage rates increase by 43 percent, divorce rates decrease by 22.5 percent, fertility up by 21 percent, and abortion down by 33.5 percent over the past nine years.

MAKING AMERICA GREAT AGAIN

Trumpism didn’t start with President Trump, and it won’t stop when he’s gone.

The relaunch of Human Events marks the institutionalization of what 2016 meant on both sides of the Atlantic.

We plan to feature both the leading thinkers as well as up and coming talent in the MAGA world.

We plan — with our brand of “tabloid intellectualism” — to appeal to both older and younger voters. To the disaffected as well as the politically engaged. And in a lot of ways, to left, right, and beyond.

Make sure to make Human Events one of the sites you regularly visit, and follow us on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube for more content.

Thank you for joining us. It should be a fun ride.
