New York City saw its biggest gang bust in history Wednesday when more than 100 members of three separate gangs were arrested for killings and gun violence.
The gangs are accused of two homicides, 19 non-fatal shootings and over 50 other shooting incidents. The arrests and indictments the gang members face are a result of a conspiracy investigation surrounding the murder of 18-year-old high school basketball star Tayshana Murphy. Though two men were already convicted for Murphy’s murder, investigators decided to delve more thoroughly into the pattern of violence plaguing the area.
Murphy’s murder was the most widely reported result of the common fights between the gangs. She was shot in her hip, wrist and chest at 4 a.m. in the hallway of her apartment building on Sept. 11, 2011.
Further details on the arrests and indictments are expected at a news conference this afternoon.
