â??Do it for the children.â? We have heard that sentiment hundreds of times from the media. In commentaries, we have heard celebrities and media personalities call for gun control to enhance the safety of children. We hear from the President over and over again that we owe it to the children to keep them safe and that that means creating new gun laws.
The media has rung the alarm bell over child safety and the preciousness of innocent life but has woefully neglected the trial of Dr. Kermit Gosnell- the Philadelphia abortionist who is standing trial for the murders of children.
Allow me to clear something up: I have my own opinions, my own beliefs and convictions. I am happy to debate the legality and morality of abortion. Thatâ??s not what this is about. The outrage I feel over the Dr. Gosnellâ??s actions, the governmentâ??s unwillingness to not look further into his practices and the mediaâ??s unwillingness to shine a light on a trial about a child-murderer is not about abortion. Itâ??s not about fetuses; itâ??s about the murder of live children.
The details are gruesome and, in truth, hard to stomach. Tales of horror have emerged from those who stood by and were coerced into doing the unthinkable and it is nauseating. Babies stacked like cordwood after having their spines â??snippedâ? after live birth, macabre tales of pieces of children left in the mother and various other assorted gruesome details have been purposefully glossed-over in the media to sanitize the discussion over abortion.
But, as I said, this isnâ??t about abortion; itâ??s about murder and the left and right should both be able to agree that murder is wrong.
Dr. Gosnell is charged with eight counts of murder in the deaths of seven babies and one woman in his care. Using untrained staff in unhygienic conditions, the doctor murdered babies so routinely that he even once joked that a baby whose neck he had slit is like â??a chicken with its head cut off.â?
The grand jury report tells a disgusting tale of gross incompetence mixed with maniacal disregard for the ethics of medicine and for human life. The report begins,
â??This case is about a doctor who killed babies and endangered women. What we mean is that he regularly and illegally delivered live, viable, babies in the third trimester of pregnancy â?? and then murdered these newborns by severing their spinal cords with scissors.â?
The report also details the clinic. Roaming cats filled the hallways; pieces of children clogged the toilets. All in the name if profit, untrained staff were invited to murder babies by â??snippingâ? their necks and pumped out narcotics at an astounding rate. The grand jury report lists the damning evidence for hundreds of pages and it is truly shocking.
But it wasnâ??t just Dr. Gosnell or his staff that failed these children. The government, despite receiving multiple tips, had not investigated the clinic since 1993. Finally, it was his mass distribution of narcotics that prompted an investigation and only then was the death factory brought to light.
However, the media is failing these children as well. The media who has covered Dahmer, Bundy and a variety of other psychopaths who have held a complete disregard for human life has remained entirely too-quiet on this outrage out of fear that this murdererâ??s profession will shine a negative light on the â??pro-choiceâ? side of the abortion debate. But again, this isnâ??t about abortion; itâ??s about murder.
The media has become too guarded with what they will or will not consider news. More interested in the narrative that is being created than the detailing of events, the mainstream media has shown itself in its coverage of this trial to be firmly an agent of the left and uninterested in reporting news that conflicts with its preferred liberal narrative.
Surprisingly, it was the words of a left-of-center journalist, Kirsten Powers, who recently admonished the liberal media. In a recent USA Today op-ed, she wrote,
â??Let me state the obvious. This should be front page news. When Rush Limbaugh attacked Sandra Fluke, there was non-stop media hysteria. The venerable NBC Nightly News’ Brian Williams intoned, â??A firestorm of outrage from women after a crude tirade from Rush Limbaugh,â?? as he teased a segment on the brouhaha. Yet, accusations of babies having their heads severed â?? a major human rights story if there ever was one â?? doesn’t make the cut.â?
The deafening chirps of crickets coming from the leftist media outlets are a disgrace. If the media intends to maintain any semblance of credibility, they cannot conspicuously overlook such newsworthy events for fear that it might invite a discussion over late-term abortions. It doesnâ??t matter if someone is â??pro-lifeâ? or â??pro-choice;â? this is a story about an accused murderer who used the law to torture and kill. We can make room on page one for that.
