The late Andrew Breitbart had a big project in the works when he passed away suddenly, at the young age of 43. He teased it a few times in the final days of his life, saying it included bombshell video of President Obama’s law-school days, previously shrouded in absolute mystery. The same media that sent squadrons of reporters to crawl through dumpsters in Wasilla, Alaska, in search of the most minute details of Sarah Palin’s early life, was remarkably incurious about the not-too-distant past of Barack Obama.
What Breitbart had uncovered began with some video the media was not interested in discovering during the 2008 campaign. (There is much more to come, according to those who carry on his work.) As Ben Shapiro writes, introducing the video at Big Government:
Below is footage of Barack Obama praising and hugging Professor Derrick Bell. It was spliced and diced by the media to avoid showing just how close Obama was to Bell. More than that, a close associate of the Obama campaign, Harvard Law School’s Professor Charles Ogletree, admitted on our exclusive tape, “We hid this throughout the 2008 campaign. I don’t care if they find it now.”
Well, we found it. And it is damaging, because Barack Obama was as close or closer to Derrick Bell than he ever was to Jeremiah Wright. Obama didn’t merely sit in the pews – or not — for Derrick Bell. He didn’t just hang out with Derrick Bell for prayers. He said: “Open up your hearts and your minds to the words of Professor Derrick Bell.”
And what did Obama want students to open their minds to? Who’s Professor Derrick Bell?
This is a close associate of Jeremiah Wright, a man who was quoted by Jeremiah Wright regularly. This is a man who posited that the civil rights movement was too moderate because it accepted the status quo, and believed that the entire legal and constitutional system had to be transformed in radical fashion. This is a man so extreme that, as we’ve reported, he wrote a story in 1993 in which he posited that white Americans would sell black Americans into slavery to aliens to relieve the national debt, and that Jews would go along with it.
At the time of Obama’s appearance, Bell was threatening to quit Harvard Law because there weren’t any African-American women on the faculty, and a female black visiting professor had just been denied tenure. Obama did not limit his support for Bell to this topic, however. As Jake Tapper of ABC News writes, Obama called Bell “the Rosa Parks of legal education” and praised the “excellence of his scholarship.”
But wait, there’s more! After the clip of Obama encouraging people to open their minds to Bell’s crackpot theories, the camera pulls back to show Professor Charles Ogletree boasting that “we hid this throughout the 2008 campaign. I don’t care if they find it now.”
How about a round of applause for those American voters! They sure got punked by the media they foolishly trusted to vet their candidates, didn’t they?
This video might well have ended the Obama campaign in 2008, particularly if it popped up right after Obama felt obliged to throw Reverend Wright under the bus, delivering what media sycophants swooned over as The Greatest Speech In History. Everyone outside of the hard-core Left was already a bit grudging when they accepted the ludicrous excuse that Obama somehow slept through Wright’s racial hatred sermons for decades. This video might have been too much for them to swallow. Happily, it’s one of many things the media didn’t work very hard to find, and the least vetted President in history was able to roll into the Oval Office with his past associations happily erased.
Professor Ogletree is wrong to think that nobody cares about seeing this video now. The Left has gone absolutely nuts over it. When Breitbart editor-in-chief Joel Pollak sallied forth to discuss the video bombshell, one of the Really Deep Thinkers on a CNN panel accused him of being “afraid of black people.” Pollak is so afraid of black people that he married one.
As Ed Morrissey of Hot Air points out, CNN’s clown-car panel, along with the rest of the Left media, are falling right into Breitbart’s trap. Part of what the happy warriors at Breitbart.com set out to demonstrate was the aggressive determination of the media to protect Obama… and, equally important, their utter ignorance of what they’re actually protecting. They don’t know the first thing about “critical race theory” or its implications. They’re like children who believe in a fairy tale, in this case about the noble Prince Barack and his determination to be a Great Uniter. Information to the contrary is summarily dismissed without any attempt to understand it at all.
J.Christian Adams sets them straight at Breitbart.com, and explains something that apparently eludes everyone who does research for CNN:
Bell did more than advocate for race-based hiring. He was perhaps the worst Johnny Appleseed of a nasty racialist legal theory called Critical Race Theory. Critical Race Theory, in a nutshell, argues that the law is a weapon of the majority whites to oppress “people of color.” It argues for “structural racism”–the idea that American institutions are aligned against blacks, whether the oppressor is the criminal justice system, a cabdriver without a fare, businesses, government, Domino’s Pizza, banks, or the police.
Critical Race Theory does not view the law as applying equally to all Americans, but advocates for racially unfair implementation of the law to right past injustice.
Most of the crackpot racial grievance you hear today has a philosophical foundation in Critical Race Theory. It is a counter-American, collectivist idea. Reparations, race-based hiring and excusing New Black Panther voter intimidation are some of the evil fruits of Critical Race Theory.
CNN host Soeldad O’Brien is proud of her utter ignorance – she flaunts it during the course of attempting to whistle past the graveyard. She very clearly has no idea what she’s talking about – and remember, Pollak was not a random interloper who wandered onto the CNN set and agreed to an impromptu interview. It’s hilarious to watch her babble like an idiot after Pollak refuses to let her dismiss what he’s saying out of hand. She could have spent ten minutes finding out what Critical Race Theory actually says, but she didn’t think it was necessary. She thought she could just repeat the words “academic theory” and “intersection” like a magic spell until Pollak was silenced.
A reputable news organization would have dismissed O’Brien from its employment within hours of this travesty airing. It’s not just that the media refuses to tell you certain things about their favored political candidates. They don’t even understand what they’re suppressing. They just know it looks bad.
The decision that lies ahead in the 2012 elections is far too important to be entrusted to the aggressively ignorant. If Obama’s embrace of Derrick Bell’s ideas in 1991 is “old news,” then so is everything Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, and Ron Paul said and did during the 90s. We know the media doesn’t believe that, not by a long shot. It’s long past time for Americans to learn something about the Democrat candidate for President in 2012.
