Rasmussen Poll: Santorum ahead by 12 points nationwide

Other polls recently have suggested Rick Santorum is about even nationally with Mitt Romney in the GOP primary.  Today Rasmussen unleashes a poll of likely voters that has Santorum an astonishing 12 points ahead:

Rick Santorum 39%

Mitt Romney 27%

Newt Gingrich 15%

Ron Paul 10%

Other / Undecided 9%

Last week, Rasmussen had Romney in the lead with 34 percent, Gingrich in second place at 27 percent, and Santorum chugging into third with 18 percent.  That poll was taken before Santorum’s widely celebrated, but largely symbolic, victories in Colorado, Missouri, and Minnesota.

Rasmussen also has Santorum trouncing Romney 55 – 34 in a head-to-head matchup.  On the other hand, a majority of poll respondents still think Romney will ultimately prevail in the GOP primary.  That would suggest Santorum has captured the attention of Republican voters, and now has to convince them he has a plausible path to victory.
